Windows Live Messenger

In the 2000s, Windows Live Messenger, together with ICQ, became the tools most used by users to communicate over the Internet. This communication method, we could consider the graphical evolution of IRCs, whose DOS-based aesthetic left a lot to be desired.

Both Messenger and ICQ became the tools of choice for many millions of users, leaving IRC for those who had more knowledge, or wanted to get in touch with other people to find information about specific or specific topics of a certain subject, thanks to the chat rooms that were at our disposal.

But as the years went by, new communication platforms for users arrived and Microsoft's Messenger messaging system fell into disuse. This application was together with a suite of applications from Microsoft called Windows Live Essential, a package of applications that we had to install independently of the version of Windows that we had and that in addition to Messenger also offered us:

  • Windows Mail Desktop
  • Microsoft Family Safety
  • OneDrive for Windows
  • windows movie maker
  • Windows Photo Gallery
  • Windows Writer
  • Microsoft Outlook Hotmail Connector

The launch of Windows 8, on October 4, 2012, marked the beginning of the end for Windows Messenger, since in addition to the announcement of the new version of Windows, Microsoft announced that the messaging application Messenger it would stop working on April 8, 2013.

The latest stable version of Windows Live Messenger is found in Windows Live Essential, a suite of extra applications for Windows that they added a series of very interesting applications such as Windows Movie Maker or Outllok Hotmail Connector. Microsoft continued to keep that suite of applications without updating until last year, at which point it removed it from its servers, preventing users from downloading it.

Taking into account that Microsoft had not updated the applications for several years, the functionality that these applications could offer us was very limited, so unless you continue to use Windows XP, it's unlikely that you're really interested in taking advantage of it.
