How to create folders in Gmail

gmail

By dint of new improvements, Gmail has become the most popular email service provider in the world. One of its most interesting aspects is the ease it offers us to organize all the content of our emails in a simple and practical way. In this post we will analyze a very specific aspect: how to create folders in gmail

Go ahead, the folder system is not an invention of Gmail, although it must be recognized that Google's email service is the one that has polished its operation the most. The old physical folders of the past have been replaced by digital filing cabinets that help us keep our correspondence in order and a clean inbox.

There is one point that differentiates Gmail folders from those of other email services such as Outlook or Yahoo Mail. Actually, being rigorous, It's not about folders, it's about labels. In any case, it assumes a similar organization system: the emails to which we assign the same label are stored together in the same place.

Next, we will explain how to create folders in Gmail from the page on a computer and how to do it through the application for mobile devices:

Create folders in Gmail step by step

create gmail folders

First of all, we are going to see what must be done to create folders in the web version of Gmail. Of course, before starting you have to log in to Gmail with our account. Then we do the following:

  1. First we click on the icon of the cogwheel or gear (top right), which allows us to access the adjustments.
  2. In the column that is displayed on the right of the screen, click on the button "View all settings".
  3. Next, we select the tab «Tags».
  4. We slide across the screen until we give, at the bottom, the option to "new label", as shown in the illustration above.
  5. In this last step we only have to assign a name for the new tag. Below the field for the new label name we see the option to link the new folder to another Gmail folder (that is, create a subfolder), by activating the "Nest tag inside » and selecting it from the list.
  6. Finally, we click the button "Create".

And that's it. Now, we can save the emails that we consider appropriate in the new folder-label using the "Move to" option and put a little order in our inbox.

Create folders in Gmail from the app

Many Gmail users only access their email through their mobile phones. They can also create and manage their folders, although there are some differences between iOS and Android.

On iOS:

  1. To begin with, we access the Gmail app on our device.
  2. Then we click on the three horizontal bars icon (found in the upper left corner of the screen) to open the options menu.
  3. We search the list of options until we find the one for "Create new tag", on which we must press.
  4. Finally, we just have to write the name of the new label and click on "To accept".

Then, to assign the new label to our emails, we just have to follow the same procedure that we explained previously in the example of the web version of Gmail.

And what about Android? Well, the reality is that the Gmail app for Android devices does not allow us to create new folders. At least not for now. The most we can do is move the emails from one folder to another (folders already created) by entering each of the messages, clicking on the three dots icon at the top right and using the “Change labels” option. .

The simplest thing for those who use Android phones is to enter the web version to create new labels-folders and then return to the mobile app to organize the emails with them.

Create filters for new emails

gmail filters

One of the most interesting functions that Gmail offers in terms of labels-folders is the one that allows us to establish filters for new emails that arrive in our inbox. This function acts as a "postman" that distributes the new emails in the corresponding mailboxes (folders). It is also responsible for automatically removing or starring incoming mail.

It is we, the users, who decide the parameters by which this filtering function should be organized. This is how to proceed:

In our Gmail account, we go to the search box and click on the icon "Show search options".

  1. The next step is set filter criteria using a series of options: sender, subject, email size, whether or not it contains certain words, date ranges, etc.
  2. Once the criteria have been established, we press the button "Create filter".
  3. Then we have to decide what we want the filter to do with the incoming messages that meet those criteria: delete them or assign them to a certain folder. Very practical.
