How to defragment our hard drive to make it faster

SSD

Mechanical hard drives today offer us a more storage space for a lower price than modern SSDs. But all time a price, and I do not mean the economic one. Mechanical hard drives (HDD) are much slower than solid hard drives (SSD).

Until the price of SSDs has dropped and they are practically within the reach of anyone, although with reduced capacities, Windows, like other applications, allowed us to defragment our hard drive to make it faster. In Spanish, defragment is relocate the data on our hard drive so that they are closer.

A mechanical hard disk is made up of a disk that stores information, information that is read as if it were a turntable, so if all the information is in order, and let's say close to each other, access speed is increased since the reader does not have to be constantly moving.

Solid hard drives (SSD) store information digitally, like pendrives, so the access speed is practically instantaneous, depending on the type of device, because here there are also faster and slower SSDs. These types of drives are not defragmented, since the information is always ordered.

How to sort the data on our hard drive

  • To access the Windows defragmenter, the best that we can currently find on the market, we must go to the Cortana search box and type Defragment and click on the first option that is displayed.
  • Once the application is opened, it will show us if the data on our hard drive is needed by a computer. Automatically, Windows 10 does it every week. If we've copied a lot of information since the last defragmentation, it will probably need to be done.
  • If so, we must select the unit that we want to optimize performance and click on Optimize.
