How to freeze tabs in the background in Google Chrome

Google Chrome

Google Chrome is constantly updated with new features, which are usually entered first in Canary. As we already told you a while ago, Canary is the experimental version of the browser. These experimental functions are introduced there so that they can be tested ahead of time. One feature that is available now is to freeze tabs in the background.

This new feature is introduced to make Google Chrome go consume less RAM. It is still one of the criticisms of the browser, so this type of measure can be a good help in this case. So for many users it may be an interesting function to try.

At the moment it is a function that we can only use in Canary, so you have to use this version of the browser. But if you have to try it and see what it has to offer us, then you will be able to try it now. If you don't use Canary on your computer, you have to download it first, because so far it cannot be used in the conventional version of Google Chrome, it will still take a few weeks to arrive officially.

The idea of this function is that those tabs that are open in Google Chrome in the background, that is, that we are not using them, are going to freeze. In this way, their operation becomes null and they will not consume resources at any time. This is important, because it helps the browser go to consume less RAM.

One of the great problems of the browser has always been consuming too many resources. For this reason, these types of functions can help to perform better and not affect the performance of the computer in such a way in general. Since those tabs that are not being used are completely frozen.

Canary operation does not present too many differences compared to Google Chrome. It is the same browser, only in this case we have to bear in mind that it is an experimental version, which leaves us with some stability problems on some occasions. But activating the experimental functions in the browser will work the same way in this case.

Therefore, we open Canary and we have to enter chrome: // flags in the address bar. This brings us to the menu of the experimental functions in it. In the menu that we have in it we have to enter the term Tab freeze. It then takes us to a function that has the same name. The only thing we are going to have to do in this case is to activate the function in question.

To do this we press in the contextual menu next to it and set it to Enabled, if we want the function to be activated directly. Although Google Chrome gives us four options in this case when it comes to using this function in it. These options are:

  • Default: Leave background tabs freeze on by default. Although it may not always work when it is in the testing phase.
  • Enabled: Activate the option so that Google Chrome will freeze by default those tabs that have been in the background for more than five minutes.
  • Do not Unfreeze: Keeps tabs open in the background but not loading.
  • Unfreeze 10 seconds every 15 minutes: Tabs are frozen in the background at all times. Although every fifteen minutes they will be updated for about ten seconds so that the information in them will be updated periodically.

So each user will be able to choose the function in the way that seems most convenient in their case, to get the most out of it when they are using Google Chrome. If the operation does not convince you, it is always possible to adjust it again, following the same steps in this case.
