How to tell if an application writes or reads from disk in Windows 10

Hard disk write cache

The applications that we have installed in Windows 10 access the hard drive when it has to carry out certain actions. This can be in two ways, writing to disk or reading data from disk. Whichever way, there are times when this hard drive usage is more intense, causing it to spin permanently. Something that could cause problems.

Not all applications write or read the disk in Windows 10. But it's good know which ones carry out this process. So we can take action on it. And there is a simple way to find out.

Although tools have emerged for this, we can verify it in a simple way using Windows 10 task manager. So we don't need to install any programs to access this information. Therefore we open the task manager (ctrl + alt + del) and then we access the details section.

Read write to disk

In this section we have various information about the applications that run on our computer. We must then select the option to select columns. We do it by clicking with the right button in the upper part, next to the description option, and that option will then appear. When it opens, a list of options will appear with a marker next to it.

In this list we find I / O Reads and I / O Writes, which we must mark. These are the options that those applications that write or read on the hard drive of our computer will show. They will show us this activity precisely. Therefore, once marked, we accept and leave this window.

Back in the Windows 10 task manager, then we can see these new columns. They provide us with this information about the writing or reading of applications on disk. Thus, we can see which ones make the most use of it.
