When we have the need to modify the operation of an application or the operation of Windows in general, we have to access windows registry, also known as Regedit. The Windows registry allows us to modify certain values so that the proper functioning of the applications or the operating system adjusts to our needs.
The Windows registry is a set of files that contains information about the operation of the operating system, It is a database where all the information related to the operating system is stored, with the hardware, the installed applications, the profiles as well as the customization that each user has established.
Before the advent of regedit, Windows used two files that were located in the root directory of our hard drive (win.ini and system.ini) both stored the information related to the Windows boot configuration. If we removed them, the version of Windows that we had installed stopped working and we had to reinstall it again, since we could not copy them from another computer as they contained specific information about ours.
Regedit, it is a very delicate part of the operating system, so it is never advisable to touch it Unless we really know what we are doing, since any badly made changes may force us to reinstall the operating system, since this database is the main source of Windows information when booting the operating system .
Fortunately every time we start our computer, Windows backs up the registry. We can restore these copies if our computer begins to have problems due to any changes we have made, for this we just have to start in the command line and write: scanreg / restore.
How to access Regedit
After all this explanation, below we are going to show you how we can access the redegit app, application that allows us to modify the Windows registry to customize the operation of our version of Windows.
- First of all, we must go to the search box, from where we can search for any type of file available on our hard drive. The search box is inside the Windows start button, except in Windows 10, which is just to the right of that button, as we can see in the image above.
- Once located in the four search, we must write regedit. Windows will return several results. We must click on the first result represented by a cube made up of smaller ones.
- Once we run the application, the upper image will be displayed. Then we can access the different settings of our version of Windows. Clicking on each folder will show all the configuration options that we can modify, as long as we know what we are doing.
