How to use a macOS virtual machine on Windows

macOS on Windows

Even if you bought a computer with Windows installed, it can actually be used with any other operating system. But before making the decision to, for example, change Windows for macOS, the most prudent thing to do is to perform a test through a virtual machine to see how everything works. In this post we explain how to use a macOS virtual machine on Windows.

In the case of replacing Windows with Linux, things are simpler. On the other hand, when it comes to macOS everything is more complicated, since it is a more closed system. Difficult, but not impossible, as we will see below.

What is a virtual machine

Before explaining how to use this resource, it is essential to know what exactly a virtual machine is. In very simplified terms, it is programs that allow us to obtain the operating system in question (in this case, macOS) through a ISO image so you can configure it later.

Using the virtual machine It is possible to use another operating system without having to install it completely on our computer and, this is also important, without having to uninstall the Microsoft OS. Thus, this formula is very useful as a test bench for an operating system that we want to install, or to use a program that is not available in Windows.

Advantages of using a virtual machine

The main arguments in favor of using a virtual machine can be summarized in the following list:

  • Gives us access to a different operating system without having to change computers. Which, if you look closely, could mean significant savings.
  • Allows us test programs and applications which are not available in the operating system that we normally use.
  • Security is total. The virtual machine is installed independently, so any problem that occurs will not affect our computer.

Disadvantages of using a virtual machine

But although all this sounds very nice, there are some very positive aspects that it is necessary to know before deciding to use a macOS virtual machine on Windows:

  • In many cases, the computer is not prepared to support two operating systems at the same time, which results in a worse performance.
  • Furthermore, for the same reasons as in the previous point, we can find a high consumption of resources.
  • Another point against is that Installing a virtual machine is a complex process. At least, more complicated than installing a normal application.

How to use VirtualBox

There are numerous programs through which to carry out this process, but if it is about using a macOS virtual machine for Windows, the reference name is undoubtedly VirtualBox. This software is free and very easy to use. Furthermore, thanks to its popularity, it is not difficult to find solutions to the main problems on the Internet in forums or on YouTube, for example.

Let's get to the practical stuff. What is there to do? First of all, it is necessary get the ISO image of the version of macOS that we want to install. An ISO image is a specific type of file (recognized by having the extension . Iso) which is used to store an exact copy of a file system within an optical drive. These files can be found without difficulty on the reliable download websites that we all know.

Once the macOS ISO image is installed on our computer, these are the steps to follow to create the virtual machine. Two phases must be completed: installation and configuration.

First phase: installation

  1. First, we download VirtualBox on our Windows computer. Then we install it and start it.
  2. In the main menu of the program, go to the tab "New", which is at the top.
  3. The next step is to fill out all the information on the form displayed: Name, Machine Folder, Type, Version… After doing so, we click on "Next" to continue the installation.
  4. Now, we select the RAM memory that we want to assign to the virtual machine.
  5. Then we choose the size of the hard drive. At this point the recommendation of 20 GB is specified.
  6. Finally, we click on "Following", which concludes the installation phase.

Second phase: configuration

Now that the virtual machine has been created, we just need to configure it to be able to use it in the way that best suits us. All you have to do is click on the “Settings” tab and assign the different available parameters.

The last step is to mount the macOS ISO image that we have previously downloaded. These are the steps to do it:

  1. First we are going to the folder containing the downloaded ISO file.
  2. then we do Double click in the file, which will be displayed in File Explorer, in the left menu. With this we will begin the action of "Mount".*
  3. Finally, you must delete the file from the virtual drive by right-clicking on it and selecting the option "Expel".

(*) If double-clicking does not work, you can try right-clicking and choosing the “Mount” option from the pop-up menu.
