Should Microsoft "kill" the Lumia family to make way for the Surface Phone?

Surface Phone

This week the rumors have returned about the possibility that Microsoft will launch to the market during the next year 2017 the Surface Phone. We have already known a large amount of information about this mobile device for a long time and we have been able to see it in several filtered images. Despite the fact that on several occasions it seemed that the Redmond were going to announce it officially, this has not happened yet.

Now that it seems that this new terminal could reach the market very soon, we cannot stop asking ourselves the question that today gives the title to this article and that is none other than; Should Microsoft "kill" the Lumia family to make way for the Surface Phone?. The answer seems complicated, but if you keep reading we will offer you an answer, the less interesting.

There is no doubt that Microsoft increasingly sells fewer Lumia terminals, and that despite the news and improvements introduced the new Lumia 950 are not having the success that was expected of them in the market. Exactly the same happens with other mobile terminals that have seen the light in recent times. In addition to this, we cannot let it pass that Windows 10 Mobile is not having the expected impact on the market.

All this has made Microsoft increasingly sell fewer smartphones and perhaps the best idea is to "kill" the Lumia family, to make way for the Surface Phone, a mobile device inspired by the successful Surface.

The idea does not seem bad and from what we have seen through different leaks and rumors the Surface Phone will not be one more mobile device of the many that currently exist on the market. Of course, if Microsoft fails again when it comes to liquidating the Lumia family and giving way to Surface Phones, perhaps we are facing the end of smartphones with the Redmond seal and also Windows 10 Mobile.

Do you think Microsoft should liquidate the Lumia family to make way for the Surface Phone?

Should not. Another Microsoft phone is another Microsoft phone. I have a Lumia 920, that changing its last name does not make it better. Introducing something "new" from scratch "again", with misgivings about compatibility and a possible new development environment is a very bad idea. If it's more of the same with the same universal apps, it won't scare off programmers.
Apple is like a symbol, Android (Samsung, Sony,…) are another symbol, Lumia (more than Microsoft) is another symbol but in a small way, and more than playing with names, it should give security of continuity and not make them wonder if it is a different product and what's in it for it. Iphone continues to add versions, Sony continues to add versions and variants, is Microsoft going to abandon continuing to add numbers? Something new that "reminds" of the compatibility break of Windows CE6, with Windows phone 7, that breaks again in Windows 8 and that can give the impression of another new beginning in the already existing Windows 10 although with its universal applications? If they do, I would very much claim that excellent features are maintained, and applications are improved, performance, less heating, etc. If it comes up as something new and is not given seniority, it will go further to shit.
My terminal is great and now that I have been able and taking advantage of the fact that it is cracking, I have ordered a 950xl for about € 410.
As long as I have the applications that I use as normal, I do not care. It has responded in the long run better than Android, of which there are also good machines. A good camera and apps to play with, it's been a long time vending.
With a new name you will not do much more than mitigate the loss of positions.
Surface would leave it as a range for other things, and perhaps later, I would replace the high-end lumia ranges with the name surface, being the same, but high-end.
The elitists of the samsung, iphone, and other terminals, will be faithful to theirs. They need a good advertisement, features and a camera, including the software to make the video and photos (surely there will be someone to compare). Low price is needed, and who compares them. In low wins there are also going to be piques.
You need to introduce them at a low price with excellent features, because otherwise they already have the same as your friends and you feel at home,
Remove Lumia to sell more expensive = bad idea.
Just wanting to change the name to surface, even if only the stickers or the box change = bad idea.
Start with excellent features at laughable prices and if you want to change the name little by little, surface is the hallmark of the high-end, good idea. Later it will be all surface if you want. But it will cost.
The market already has its terminals and ranges "defined" so that something once again "new" can find a place.
Or it is believed that the lower terminals abound like drops of water and displace Android (and where new iPhones do not exist).
Perhaps some more terminals with parent-child applications for homework, reminders, direct chats ... I don't know, it was happening to me now. Although it would compete with more silly terminals, but ... if the price allows it, and like it, it can be a ticket.
The fact that they have Lumia 640 at around € 105 is good for penetration, although there are simpler and cheaper ones. I think they should attract parents and children. If children want to play something more powerful, they should be able to have a lumia 640 at a good price like those € 105 that are in few places.

Must Kill Lumia. But Surface has to be an x86 (x64) phone that gives 100% the same experience and possibilities as a PC !!!
