Threads can now be used from a Windows computer

Threads

Good news for Threads users. A few weeks ago Meta announced the launch of a new Threads desktop app for Windows, which will allow you to browse this social network from any computer that runs this operating system.

This is a great step forward in the short life of this social network. Until now, the microblogging social network only allowed interactions between users from the mobile application, that is, it was only possible to do so from a smartphone. In order to be able to use it from a desktop computer, a somewhat rudimentary web version had to be used that was accessed from the browser. The new application finally arrives to solve this lack.

The news was announced by himself Mark Zuckerberg in a Threads post. It details that
Users will now also be able to choose to use Threads from a desktop application specifically designed for computers. The application will allow you to perform exactly all the actions that are available in the mobile app: share new posts, manage settings, etc.

But before continuing with more details, since it is a relatively new social network (it was launched in the summer of 2023), let's briefly review what Threads is.

What is Threads?

threads

Threads was born last year, conceived with the aim of becoming a alternative to X (previously called Twitter) within the segment of microblogging. It was developed by the same team responsible for Instagram. In fact, both social networks, as well as Facebook and the instant messaging application WhatsApp They belong to the same business group. If we already have an IG account, we will not need to register again to use Threads.

There are many reasons why Threads is often compared to Twitter. In reality, both social networks share many points in common and compete with each other. Only time will tell if the candidate will manage to unseat the current champion or everything will simply be a failed attempt.

Among other things, this is what we can do with Threads:

  • Create posts with text with a limit of 500 characters per message.
  • Open threads.
  • Upload images, videos, GIFs, surveys...
  • Reply and/or quote messages from other users.
  • Translate publications.
  • Use hashtags.
  • Share a post directly to stories of Instagram.
  • Mute, restrict and block messages from other users.
  • Configure our profile.

The new Threads desktop app

The great news for those who use the computer more than the mobile phone, as we indicated at the beginning of the article, is that it will no longer be necessary to access this social network through the browser. Now that will be possible in a more direct and simple way, simply downloading and installing the Threads app for Windows in his desk.

This is the same formula that is already used with other social networks such as WhatsApp. This new desktop app is located available in the Microsoft Store app store. The big difference with respect to the web version is that it does not require the use of a browser, but rather offers the user a direct and more fluid experience.

Once installed, the application is shown to us with an interface practically identical to that of the web version of Threads, with the options bar and its icons (search, publication, notifications, profile, etc.) located at the top of the screen. So, if we are already familiar with it, we will not have any problem getting used to this new way of using Threads.

The application, which will barely take up storage space on our computer (0,7 MB), is rated by users with a rating of 4,8 out of 5, garnering very good opinions so far.

Threads within the Meta ecosystem

meta threads

One of the objectives of this new version of Threads for Windows is to dand strengthen the presence of Threads in the Meta digital ecosystem. This will make interactions and the involvement of the rest of the community users easier.

Meta's plans for its platform microblogging Threads are very ambitious. This year a testing phase has begun focused on this application whose main objective is that users of the Facebook and Threads platforms can interact in a broader way, with many new possibilities at your fingertips.

What will be achieved through this new development is that users of iOS devices will be able to share text content and links on Facebook completely automatically. This means that it will be published in Threads. A first step for a future full integration of the different Meta social networks.

Ultimately, this is nothing more than an extension of the cross-posting options already possible between Facebook and Instagram, whose users can already share reels, publications and stories simultaneously on both platforms. A way to reach a larger audience without additional efforts.
