VLC Media Player, one of the most famous multimedia players has recently announced its current development for the Microsoft Xbox One game console. The goal is to release the first stable edition of the program this summer, as part of a future expansion of the application under the Universal Windows Platform (UWP) environment that implements Windows 10.

VLC is a popular player, largely due to its free price and open source, which allows the development of interesting plugins for it. Currently this player is available for a large number of platforms, including Windows 8 / 8.1 and Windows 10, but without using the aforementioned platform that allows it to be run on any device (computers, tablets, smartphones, Xbox One game consoles or even the HoloLens) that uses the latest system from the Redmond company as an operating system.

Xbox One adopted the new Windows 10 system in November of last year. Since then, in addition to including the backward compatibility of the console with certain titles of its predecessor universal application platform was adopted, which allows the execution of any application developed for this edition of the operating system with this function. In this way, the home console can be transformed into a complete development kit if the right tools are used.

Those Xbox One users who are part of the preview program and have access to the update Anniversary they will be able to put their console in developer mode and test the first public version of VLC Media Player next week. If everything goes according to plan in summer it will be available to everyone, so we will be aware of its evolution until then.

The arrival of VLC Media Player to Xbox One is a clear example of how UWP platform can benefit Microsoft console among other terminals. Until now, only publishers who had a development kit could develop video games for Xbox One, but from now on with UWP the possibility of doing the same with these other applications opens up.
